The glamorous yet brutal nature of concert industry through eyes of an intern

Text

Well, today is my last day as an intern with AEG Live, and I have to say I have never been more sad to end a semester as I am this fall. Granted, I am happy that I don’t have to go to class for a month and a half, but if I had it my way, I’d stay here forever.

The people at this office have become a very important part of my life, and without them I would not feel as ready as I do to step out into the real world and work in this industry. Of course I wish they could hire me right here and now, but seeing that this is reality I know that’s sadly not possible :/

I have been put to some serious work in this office, work I did not even know I could do, and that alone has helped me grow stronger and tougher in this business. I know my strengths, I am more aware of my weaknesses, and I know what I have to do to turn them into strengths. All of this thanks to the people I sit here with today.

To my colleagues at AEG/TMG: thank you for all you have done. Thank you for treating me as part of your family and making me feel at home. I have experienced so many new and amazing things, and you all have become wonderful friends and mentors to me during the last four months. I will miss you more than I can say! I hope that I have been as good to you all as you have been to me. I will never, EVER forget you! :)

love love love love,
Snooks.

hey ya’ll! haven’t posted in a while so i figured i’d pop in and say hello! i haven’t been to a show since the mumford show in knoxville because school and work is KICKING MY ASS, but I am going to try and make it to john butler trio on wednesday. my boss left yesterday to go to NYC to see mumford play their last 2 shows and i could not be more jealous. anyone see any cool shows over the weekend?

  • Question: The other day you mentioned Grammy U. How do you join that? And how'd you land the internship with AEG? I book shows at my college, but I'm always curious how people get involved in Music City. ;)

  • Answer:

All you have to do is go on Grammyu.com and sign up! I belive its $25 for a year membership and $50 for a four year membership? It might have changed but that’s what it was when I signed up! I am a campus representative so if you have any other questions let me know!

I got the internship with AEG Live through my school. I am a student at Middle Tennessee State University, and I am majoring n Music Business, so I am getting college credit for this. The school has a database that hooks you up with contact information for a bunch of companies in Nashville and all over the country, so I just e-mailed my current boss and she interviewed me and gave me the job! It. is. awesome.

What school do you go to?

If I didn’t think my life could’ve gotten any better after LAST monday, last night proved that it could. My boss got me and my boyfriend tickets to see Mumford in Knoxville at the Valarium, and it was well, WELL worth the trip. I have to say that nothing can REALLY compare to their show in Nashville (War Memorial is a much bigger venue and I feel like they played longer in Nashville plus Old Crow was there), but it was still amazing in every way. Cadillac Sky = amazing. King Charles = Amazing. Mumford… holy shit. It was Sam’s (my boyfriend) first time ever seeing them and after we left the only thing he could say was “wow.” For someone who is not a big music lover he was blown away. And Jerry Douglas came on stage and played the lapslide for a couple songs which made me almost pee my pants. They are just phenomenal. There’s not really much else to say about it! I’m so glad I went! Thank you AEG for letting me have the coolest life ever! :)

I am currently in knoxville in line to see MUMFORD again! :) pictures will come during/after the show!

So last night I went to see MGMT at Ryman Auditorium. It was my first time at the Ryman, and after last night I am certainly a believer. The acoustics in there are phenomenal! I had seen MGMT once before at Bonnaroo 2009 and they were awesome, so I had pretty high expectations. My expectations were met. They were awesome! Everybody was dancing and having a blast — I hope they come back soon! I’ve posted some pictures for ya’ll to see. Their light show was pretty freakin cool.

I’ve felt comfortable at AEG from the beginning (no one ever really made me feel uncomfortable), but after last night I really feel at home here. I was there by myself (my friends had tickets but I couldn’t sit with them cause some bitch was starting shit), so I stayed with my bosses and they gave me beer (i’m 21, don’t worry) and let me hang out with them. I am really starting to understand how awesome the world of concert promotion is, I mean it’s obviously awesome no matter what but now I REALLY get it, and I feel like this is really something that I want to do for the rest of my life. Hopefully I will be able to find a job after I graduate, keep your fingers crossed, and if I do I would not mind planting my butt right in the chair I am sitting in now and keeping it there for a while. I feel like I belong. I love love love going to shows and I am good at talking to people and I really am starting to learn a lot about marketing and promotion and I really enjoy it. That was a really long sentence. But seriously, I love these people and I love this job. I am sad that I only have about a month and a half left before the semester is over, because I don’t want to leave! But I must graduate college at SOME point, so I guess it is inevitable. Maybeeeeeeee I can just work here forever and get my degree online? Doesn’t sound to promising but hey, it could happen.

PS I think I am going to Knoxville on Monday to crash the Mumford and Sons show at the Valarium (if I can get my shift covered at work.) If I do, there will be tons of pictures coming :)

Ciao,
Katie
